Before a planned visit
Prepare for a useful discussion.
A few existing records and a clear account of your symptoms can help the treating team compare the options.
Records to have available
- Existing CT, MRI, ultrasound or angiography images, with their reports
- Previous discharge summaries and procedure notes
- Recent blood tests, if already performed
- A list of medicines and supplements, including blood thinners
- Information about allergies, kidney disease, previous reactions to contrast and possible pregnancy
- A referral letter, if one has been provided
Keep original reports and image files where possible. Do not delay urgent care to gather them. Do not arrange new tests or stop medicines solely on the basis of this checklist.
Questions worth asking
- What is the diagnosis, and how certain is it?
- Does this finding explain my symptoms?
- What happens if I wait or use medicines first?
- What are the alternatives, including surgery?
- What are the important risks in my case?
- What improvement is realistic, and how will it be measured?
- How will recovery, follow-up and any complications be managed?
- What costs and coverage need confirmation?
Instructions about fasting, medicine changes, travel and recovery should come from the treating team after the procedure and anaesthetic plan are agreed.
